The most common type of metal roof being installed today is the standing seam metal roof.  These come in a variety of colors and patterns are available through several different vendors.  There are many variances in installation types, gauges and hail resistance.  Metal roofing is also offered in several different styles, that mimic other types of roofing while providing the longevity of metal.  One of the biggest advantages over traditional composition roofing is the longevity of metal.  In most cases, metal roofs will far outlast their composition counterpart.

Several Common names are used in referencing sheet metal roofing.  “5V” Crimp, “R” Panel, corrugated or agricultural roofing, face-fastened panels or  through-fastened panels.  Sheet Metal roofing is manufactured primarily from galvalume or galvanized steel in thicknesses that vary between 24 and 30 gauge. The defining characteristic of all sheet roofing is large panels (or sheets) of varying widths and lengths that overlap and have exposed fasteners. The fasteners are typically self tapping galvanized screws with neoprene washers driven through the overlapping portions of the panels, as well as in other strategic locations and into the roof decking and or purlin.

  • Durability- One of the best features of a Metal Roof is that it will last a great deal longer than a composition roof.

  • Expense- While being the most affordable of the metal roofing options.  It will still be much more expensive than a shingle composition roof
  • Fasteners- Metal Roofs expand and contract all of the time due to the wide variance in temperature they are exposed too.  This can cause the fasteners to “wallow out” especially if they are fastened to an OSB substrate.
  • Rust- Over time they will begin to rust or oxidize.
  • Paint- Over time the paint on colored options will begin to fade.
  • Oil Canning- Oil canning can occur with all types of metal roofing.  What is “oil canning” it is defined as the perceived waviness of a metal panel and is an inherent characteristic of light-gauge, cold-rolled flat metal products. In other words, it’s a visual phenomenon that makes metal panels look wavy or somewhat distorted, especially in the broad, flat areas of a metal roof or wall system.

This is the most commonly recognizable metal roof.  They come in a variety of colors and patterns.  These roofs are typically installed with a clip system that allows the roof to “float”.  This is beneficial in helping with expansion and contraction of the roof due to changing temperature.   There are also no holes in being put in the panel from fasteners as they are “clipped” in place.
